GEOFFREY BULMER’S letter about Israel (HAS, Nov 28) was very interesting.

In 1948, I was a National Service peace-keeper in Palestine. Mere weeks before Israel’s formation, I was in a group of time-expired soldiers held up by Jewish terrorists. It took hard fighting to get us out. I could hardly be supportive to such like.

Arriving home and resolving to enjoy life, a little bird told me that my many mates killed by terrorists could never have their names inscribed on our war memorials, thanks to Britons with certain connections, and nods in parts of Westminster.

Deplorable. But there was nothing I could do. I just carried on enjoying life, like any 19-year-old.

George Preece, Billingham.
