THE use of the word “treacherous” to describe snow, as used on The Northern Echo’s front page story of December 6, and in many other publications and news reports, is just wrong.

Treachery is a human trait and it is not possible for any inanimate object, ie a road, to use this to cause suffering and distress. Hazardous would be a much better use of the English language.

Also, page four of the same edition showed a picture of a car apparently “buried in snow”, according to the caption.

In actual fact it has a covering of 100mm or so. Was the subeditor trying to be more exciting at the expense of a true picture?
