THE letter from Mrs J Robson (HAS, Nov 19) about the regular contributors to the paper’s letters page cogently reflects the general disapproval of parts of this column.
Similar concerns have been expressed by many readers in recent past but you continue to publish some pointless letters with a hint of schoolboy humour.
I am convinced that the current format of HAS, and publication of letters from a clique, has not only lowered the tone but also put off many readers.
It is also clear from persistent complaints about the letters that they do not appeal to an important section.
More ominously, much of the HAS page is now rusty and stands in need of reform Once again, I appeal to the editor and his team to revamp this column and deploy stricter criteria for publication of letters, just as a number of other regional papers do, with profit for all concerned.
Editor, I trust you will now listen to your discerning readers or face continuing decline, with the loss of a substantial segment of the your market share.
Dr Abdul Jaleel, Darlington.
