THE BBC Trust is soon to announce decisions about the future of local radio because cuts have to be made across the board.
I would urge readers to make their feelings known because these cuts will affect listeners enormously.
Instead of each local station broadcasting their region’s news, activities and entertainment during afternoons and evenings they will share programmes with neighbouring stations. Surely, that doesn’t make it “local” any more?
Local radio is vitally important to the elderly, housebound, disabled and young mothers.
The BBC offers an eclectic range of output and currently meets its remit of educating, entertaining and informing.
When it was first introduced it was such an innovation to get up-to-date news in your local area. It will be shocking if we lose this (albeit for part of the day).
Your readers can make their feelings known by going on-line at bbc.co.uk/bbctrust.
In the North-East we are very lucky to have some excellent broadcasters who are as good (if not better) than many of the national presenters.
When Mike Parr left BBC Newcastle I felt he was a huge loss but I am pleased to say he is now presenting from BBC Tees each morning.
