EMMA THOMAS wrote a letter regarding Christmas in which she mentioned the seduction of TV adverts which could leave people in debt after they have spent money on the goods (HAS, Nov 23). The best way to ignore these "buy now, pay later" advertisements is to put a few quid away each week, then attend stores where you can afford to purchase festive gifts for your loved ones.
It is easier said than done, I know, but at least you can buy a present there and then, without the added interest of monthly payments, which can be as high as a 24 per cent annual percentage rate on top of the value.
Emma also mentioned that she hopes that God brings people harmony and a little hope during the season, and I share her views.
Please do not get in debt, folks. Be sensible, buy what you can afford and enjoy the festivities. Christmas is about celebrating the birth of the good Lord Jesus Christ and sharing gifts with others. It should not be a period of worry and even more financial hardship.
