I WOULD disagree with Colin Wilson (HAS, Nov 21) regarding letters from Bernie Walsh.

I have always found his letters to be very well written. He has a knack of condensing a topic and yet still presenting the issues fairly – hardly “incessant ramblings”.

In fact, over the years I have been reading The Northern Echo, Mr Walsh’s letters stand out as a beacon of reasoned argument and balance. I’m sure plenty of readers would agree.

As for poor old Christopher Wardell, if he had lived in the 17th Century I’m sure some disgruntled HAS correspondents wielding torches and pitchforks would have chased him out of Darlington (probably because of unfounded rumours he consorted with aliens on the moors).

Thereafter, we would celebrate the event by burning huge Wardell effigies, and letting off fireworks for weeks prior to the actual date, much to everyone’s annoyance.

This would then be known throughout the land as Wardell- Fawkes night.
