PLEASE do stand corrected Mr D Llewellyn as I believe your letter (HAS, Nov 1) was inaccurate on a number of fronts.
The new swimming pool at Consett will form part of a joint project with Consett Academy. It will not be run by the academy nor will public access to the pool be reduced.
I am confident the new facility will provide some new and exciting opportunities to increase access to swimming for the local community.
Of all the facilities within the centre, the pool is likely to receive the least academy use and will certainly provide new more appropriate facilities to meet the ongoing commitment to curriculum primary school swimming for the area.
The former district council capped its commitment to leisure provision at £10m in 2008, some £4.7m less than the current resource made available by Durham County Council.
The investment will include the redevelopment of the football and other clubs, as this is an investment into sport and leisure in Consett with an aim of encouraging more participation.
One can only conclude from your letter that you do not believe the tastes, desires and aspirations of Consett people have moved on since the last centre was built and that the current football ground provides a pleasing addition to the town's landscape.
Not a view that the majority of people in Consett would share.
Councillor Clive Robson,
Durham County Council.
