IN the interest of democracy it is important for people to resist the proposed boundary changes (Echo, Oct 21).
I write as a member of the present Sedgefield constituency which, under the new proposals, would spread across three different local authorities and attempt to join up disparate communities from Shildon through Aycliffe to Yarm.
In pursuing the sacred cow of equalization of numbers, communities will be divided, natural historic groupings will be destroyed, opposite banks of rivers will be joined, mountains will be flattened, and natural lines of communication will be ignored.
At the same time as this is happening, the number of MPs is set to be reduced whereas the unelected House of Lords is being packed out.
