YET again, there was a magnificent effort made by those participating in this year’s Darlington carnival.

The stalls in Stanhope Park were perhaps rather disappointing with little variety.

Could Darlington council encourage more organisations to participate by perhaps charging a more realistic fee?

Victim Support, a charity which had a stall two years ago for the reasonable cost of £10, was asked to pay £65 for a single table.

Like many other charities, Victim Support is struggling with financial cut-backs and the cost prohibited its participation – a shame when these groups strive to exist on people’s generosity.

It isn’t, of course, just the money.

If events like these were better supported it would raise the profile of organisations in the community, encourage more visitors and generally make for a better day all round.

How about a free year in 2012 for all charities and community groups?
