I AM clearly not alone in following the recent exchanges between some of the more prolific contributors to HAS, each seeking to assert intellectual superiority over the other.

Fortunately, society allows us to express contrary views and opinions, and we’re lucky to have a free press that allows us this privilege.

I detect an underlying hint of intolerance in these exchanges.

For instance, VJ Connor’s recent contribution regarding mobile phones struck a chord with me, but not the conclusion to “confiscate” them.

Who is being pompous and rude? The individual using a mobile in the presence of others, who could clearly ask him or her to desist should they so choose, or the person who seeks to impose their will on others?

Similarly, attacks on the extensive coverage of Wimbledon are unnecessary, unless your television doesn’t have an “off” switch. It’s an excuse to “get out more”.

So, let’s show more tolerance for the diverse nature of our society, embrace change and respect the fact that we are individuals in an ever changing world.

There are many, many people who don’t enjoy the freedoms that our ancestors fought and died for.
