COUNTY Councillor Richard Bell has expressed the view that Durham County News should be scrapped to save money (HAS, June 1).
Most of the information in this expensive magazine can be accessed by the public elsewhere.
My belief is that to discontinue this publication would not significantly detract from anyone’s quality of life, unlike some of the council’s other cuts to public services which affect vulnerable sectors of the community.
There has been little evidence of the savings we were promised from this new unitary authority.
Council leader Simon Henig, in his introduction to the latest issue of Durham County News, says that Durham County Council has to save £66.4m from its budget.
Surely, he should look no further than the money spent on sustaining this publication of dubious worth.
Jeff Daley, Spennymoor.
