IN RESPONSE to the excellent letter Where in the World? (HAS, June 9) may I imagine a country where an electorate for the last 40 odd years has:

• Demanded cheaper goods to buy with its increasing wages – hence goods made in the developing world;
• Expected house prices to rise to increase its wealth;
• Wanted its utilities sold for short term gains in shareholdings;
• Demanded our banks create accounting procedures that gave more personal interest to its savings;
• Insisted on the right to buy social housing at the expense of building it;
• Sent its troops to die combating heroin production in Afghanistan, but excused its dealers and users at home;
• Voted for lower income tax, so its take home pay can be frittered away on foreign made goods, fuelling credit agreements or outbidding its members in the housing market.

I am afraid the country gets what it wants or in most cases what it deserves.
