MOVING on from Jeremy Whiting’s letter (HAS, June 7) about the possible closure of the children’s heart unit at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, I believe that all heart units for children with a long and proven track record should be allowed to continue for the sake of the families.
Has anyone really considered the effect an extremely ill child can have on the family and siblings?
The anxiety and stress is surely enough without having to make decisions whether to travel a long distance, and perhaps stay, with the sick child and leave other young children behind.
The parents have to cope with the practicalities of cost, travel, accommodation and subsistence if staying with the ill child and the separation from other children who also have needs which must be met. Who will look after them?
Please let the decision makers “have a heart” and show some compassion.
Pat Cutmore, Heighington.
