FURTHER to The Northern Echo article “We must look to the future” (Echo, June 1).
It is worth clarifying for Echo readers that the Hartlepool pipe mill has orders, it is the large pipe division at Hartlepool pipe mills which has contract orders finishing on pipe project work.
Having worked at all the pipe mills I have some knowledge of how the steel industry works.
Notwithstanding this clarification, the article by Andy Richardson was very well written, putting a more positive slant on what was not only a bad day for Teesside Steel (the loss of 390 jobs, but no plant closures) but a very bad day for Scunthorpe steel where we have seen the loss of 1,200 jobs and the closure the bloom and billet mills, plus the mothballing of one of its three blast furnaces (the Queen Bess). We feel for our steel colleagues in Scunthorpe.
