OVER the years Britain’s links with America have been significant, socially, economically and politically.
At times there have been tensions but never a falling out.
Like any relationship, there is the question of who has been the more dominant partner.
During the presidency of George W Bush there was real concern that his hold over Tony Blair led us into an invasion of Iraq.
However, the special relationship continues to flourish.
There are the economic ties, the multi-national businesses and treaties, media and entertainment. Then there has been the emergence of American players in the Premiership and US ownership.
The love affair between America and Britain is epitomised by so many things.
President Obama’s state visit was as much about acknowledging the relationship as it is about him strengthening his own position at home and on the world stage.
