IN HER support of Tony Kelly’s letter on the royal wedding, Joyce Rutter ponders whether some contributors to HAS “ever have a laugh” (HAS, May 24).
I do, frequently.
And enjoying myself doesn’t require the spectacle of watching vapid, over privileged people getting married.
In contrast, anyone who gets so excited about the wedding of two people that they’ve never met must have pretty empty lives of their own.
The spectacle aside, objection to the ceaseless TV coverage of the day in question is based on principle: that it is not acceptable for someone to be given public office based on nothing more than who their parents were.
But the prospect of the UK actually becoming a grown-up country which chooses the individuals in important constitutional positions, and holds them accountable for their actions, is made virtually impossible by a sickening automatic wilful deference to one family simply because they call themselves “royal”.
