“THERE will be no tax rises” (John Major). “All our spending commitments will be funded by a reform of the benefits system” (Tony Blair and Gordon Brown). “We will hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty” (Tony Blair).

“We will hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty” (David Cameron). “If elected I will serve a full term” (Tony Blair). “There will be no return to boom and bust” (Gordon Brown).

As those quotes show, breaking pledges is what politicians do.

So what have the Lib Dems done that is so much worse than the behaviour of the other two main parties over the last 50 years?

It would be particularly interesting to be told which law or convention is supposed to prevent them forming a coalition with the Conservatives, especially when Nick Clegg was making it absolutely clear before the last election, to anybody with the wit to listen, that he was prepared to consider working with David Cameron, but not with Gordon Brown. And what reasonable person could possibly hold that against him?
