ROB MERRICK is right to draw attention to the illegal change of tactics in the Libyan civil war, from the protection of civilians to regime change (Echo, May 12).

However, David Cameron deserves no praise from Mr Merrick, even for our initial involvement in this increasingly bloody affair.

This was quixotic but illconceived, and with no thought to the consequences.

One of these is the pitiful flow of mostly poor, mostly darkskinned, migrants from Libya to the EU.

War creates refugees. The better-off Brits were lifted out early on, despite Mr Cameron’s dithering and bungling.

But 12,000 ill-educated Africans have been washed up on Europe’s shores in the past couple of months. Well over 1,000 have perished on their journey in unseaworthy, uncrewed vessels.

And the despicable Theresa May and Nick Clegg declared UK determined not to accept refugees from Libya.

Many wait in French camps having obtained Italian passports and look to the UK for sanctuary.

We have dropped bombs on their country to give Libyans a “better life”.

We have prolonged the vicious conflict in Libya, but, when faced by the entirely predictable refugee fall-out, we turn our heads the other way. This disgraceful Government brings shame to us all Rob Meggs, Hartlepool.
