WITH a huge national debt, we squander millions on debt interest payments every day – money which would otherwise be spent on schools, hospitals and policing.Labour’s economic legacy is not a happy one.
It is right that Durham County Council is looking at cutting costs and making savings.
These difficult times should be used to think creatively, to find new ways of delivering services, to devolve power down to communities and to seek real value for money.
However, few will take Durham County Council seriously while it has a chief executive earning more than the prime minister.
At £200,000 per annum and with £41,800 in pension contributions, George Garlick’s income is obscene in the context of a Labour council prepared to cut school transport, libraries and social care.
