I WAS saddened to read about the cancellation of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme by Darlington Borough Council (HAS, Jan 19).
The scheme in Darlington was one of the most successful in the North-East, due to the commitment of Judy Bowerbank and her team.
It gave young people an opportunity to work for a worthwhile accreditation that is valued by prospective employers.
Sometimes a Duke of Edinburgh Award is the only accreditation a young person achieves.
I am concerned that this may also be accompanied by other reductions in services for young people in the town.
A reduction in community grants will directly affect the provision of youth clubs and other community activities.
If Darlington Borough Council does not value the important work of the Duke of Edinburgh Award team what other youth work services will young people lose? Youth clubs, the “chill out”
cafe, Newblood music gigs, Street Work, support for schools or even the excellent facilities at C:The Box?
