DURHAM County Council has announced proposals to withdraw subsidies for most evening and Sunday bus services in the county (Echo, Jan 10).
Were it not saddled with the farcical free concessionary travel scheme, then these cuts would not be as savage.
I am not against the elderly and disabled having free travel, but this policy was never going to work.
The money for this policy was never there in the first place.
Some concessionary pass holders will use the bus to cross the road, ride one stop, or travel for miles just to buy a loaf of bread.
It never happened when the half-fare system was in place.
This mismanaged scheme must be abolished before too long.
