DAVID WARD (HAS, Jan 10) belongs to a tribe who thought the earth was flat.
It is impossible to argue with someone who is so convinced of the righteousness of their crusade that they do not allow actual history and facts to get in the way of their beliefs.
Millions of socialists fought fascism in the UK and around the world, and continue to do so.
Socialism cannot be neatly categorised and written off as authoritarian, as there are more libertarian forms of socialism, and the growth of anarchist socialism is not to be written off either.
As for the economy, Mr Ward, as usual for right wingers, is ignorant about actual historical development.
Serious economists have long accepted that UK economic decline in world markets existed from the late 19th Century onwards, well before the Labour party was even formed, thus socialism cannot be blamed for economic decline.
British economic decline continued throughout the 20th Century and will continue.
The UK’s peak was reached long ago for various technological and economic reasons.
