I THANK J Henderson, (HAS Dec 30) for his comments about my letter on the determination of the date of Boxing Day.
The Christian church determined that December 25 would be the day of Christmas and that Sunday would be their Sabbath Day, thus Monday to Saturday are regarded as “weekdays”. I don’t dispute this!
With Boxing Day, currently, there seems to be an acceptance, that it must now be the day after Christmas Day and not the first weekday after, which until fairly recently was the authoritative view of such as the Oxford University Press.
Has there been an official dictum on this subject or is it just a casual adoption?
Eric Woodley, Billingham.
