FOR more than 50 years my life, and that of my family and friends, has been enriched by productions at the Civic Theatre and, lately, at the Arts Centre, in Darlington.
In the pursuit of economies I understand that these two centres of excellence may close.
If they do, the taxpayers of Darlington will be relieved of contributing a very small amount in subsidy.
I am of an age to have experienced previous cuts.
The arts, sport and libraries – socalled non-essentials – are sacrificed, impoverishing the community at the time.
More distressing has been the severe restriction of opportunity, especially in the young and talented, to create that which enhances the spirit.
So much will be lost and it will be very difficult to find again.
The beautiful town of Darlington, its history, its culture, the facilities it possesses which aid diverse creative talents in its young, are well known and respected.
Please, do not extinguish such bright lights in this dark time.
