BRITISH Summer Time ends early tomorrow and the clocks go back an hour. But what if it didn’t?
Middlesbrough and Redcar Friends of the Earth group and lots of organisations are supporting the campaign to get the clocks moved forward by one hour all year round so that it stays lighter for longer in the evenings.
This would mean an average of 55 minutes of extra useable sunlight each day – whether you’re playing sports, enjoying extra time in the pub’s beer garden, or simply getting some valuable vitamin D from the sun’s rays.
By moving Britain’s clocks forwards by one hour throughout the year, research shows that it would cut at least half a million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, save lives on our roads and give a boost to sport, leisure and domestic tourism. What’s more, it’s practically free and it could happen right away.
Changing our clocks so we are awake for more of the time the sun is out is a no-brainer: they did it during the war. Please join me and the thousands of other supporters at lighterlater.org
