WHAT sort of an “Alice in Wonderland” financial system runs Teesside Airport? (I refuse to call it Durham Tees Valley – DTV: deep vein thrombosis).
Have they not heard of SPQR?
No, it’s not just a plaque below a Roman eagle standard, but is just as powerful today as “Small Profit, Quick Returns”.
If the airport reduced charges by ten per cent and concentrated on a viable flight programme, it could justify its case for extra charges as it has excellent facilities – but imposing an extra £6 simply to fly from there (Echo, Oct 15), without adding to its flight traffic, will be financial suicide.
Here’s an example of where Teesside, a brilliant airfield, misses out: fly to Egypt, direct, on holiday, the aircraft available leaves early morning from Manchester Airport. The taxi fare more than £75 single.
The airport authority should concentrate on getting more flights and not hitting a predictably decreasing number of travellers’ pockets. In this no-win situation, it is on a hiding to nothing.
