THERE will be much discussion about yesterday’s Comprehensive Spending Review, but the economic outlook is uncertain because of the need for more international agreement and the possibility of a trade war between China and US.
It is too early to tell whether the decisions of the coalition Government will balance the books because much depends on the state of international trade.
I am not inclined to say too much about the Government’s proposals. What is important is that if there are job losses in the public sector there is an expansion of employment in the private sector to soak it up.
Where cuts are made in services we should expect the Government to ensure they are only temporary.
There is a job for a responsible Opposition to do in Parliament.
What encourages me is seeing Darlington Labour MP Jenny Chapman campaigning on the streets against public spending cuts (Echo, Oct 18), which shows there are MPs prepared to come out from their Westminster comfort zone once elected and engage the public in debate.
We live in worrying times and electors are entitled to have contact with their MPs and feel that they are prepared to play their part in protest and debate.
Geoffrey Bulmer, Billingham.
