FOLLOWING the death of Alwyne Worthy, secretary of the Old Boys’ Association of Eastbourne School, Darlington, in 1999, I found some papers relating to the organisation.
I sent them to the school thinking they would like to put them up somewhere for all to see. I had a very nice letter back from the then head teacher, TR Appleton, saying they were very acceptable as they constantly collected up bits and pieces.
A few weeks ago, as the school has now been superseded by St Aidan’s Academy, I wrote to the head asking if they are still exhibited in the school.
Imagine my surprise to receive a letter stating that all the documentation in the school had been transferred to Darlington Borough Council for disposal or archive.
It was suggested I contact the local authority which I did, only to receive a negative reply. I also contacted the local studies librarian, which also brought a negative reply.
As these documents were very precious to me I wonder if anybody knows where they were sent? Surely they were not destroyed, or were they? Is that what happens these days?
