I WAS shocked to read the jaw-dropping article, “Bonus review for top doctors” by health editor Barry Nelson (Echo, Oct 14). Later, speaking to a retired nurse, who had worked in the NHS for many years, she was quite aware of these bonuses, saying they caused a lot of ill-feeling within the lower ranks of the NHS.
Whatever happened to the idea of a day’s pay for a day’s work? If the system of bonuses is now prevalent in this country today, does that mean everyone can apply for a bonus for a day’s work well done?
If that is the case, why not a bonus for the cleaners for well cared for wards, cooks for a meal well presented, a nurse for exceptional service to patients?
This Government should not wait until next year for the Doctors’ and Dentists’ Review Body’s review report into this greedy and arrogant practice. It should step in now while it is busy cutting money available to the lower paid in this country.
