STUDENTS all over England and Wales are going to face massive debts later in life. Will this encourage the brightest and the best to emigrate? It very well might. We are practically showing them the door. Does removing the cap on fees mean only the children of rich parents will get to go to Oxford and Cambridge? Well it certainly makes it more likely only the rich will get to Oxbridge.
One has to ask if Nick Clegg and David Cameron understand the problem.
Nigel Boddy, Peterlee, Co Durham.
IF a university has 20,000 students paying £3,000 each it is collecting £60m per year – a lot of money. It should have to prove it is spending it wisely and should then prove it needs to increase fees by publishing its accounts.
Let us not forget the 75 per cent of the population (the ordinary people) who do not go to university, such as bus drivers, motor mechanics, painters, joiners, shop workers, etc. We used to have a number of technical colleges in the Teesside area looking after their needs – not any more.
