LAST year, the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help assisted more than 500 people across County Durham.

The branch’s trained volunteers are an integral part of one of Britain’s oldest national military charities, which is committed to helping those who serve or used to serve in the Armed Forces and the families of both.

Nationally, the charity annually provides reliable, caring and trusted service for more than 50,000 people, from the elderly war veteran or widow facing hardship to Territorial Army soldiers returning from conflict.

A single day’s paid service in any of the three services is all that is needed to qualify for assistance. SSAFA offers experienced, non-judgemental and confidential advice to members of the ex-service community.

Casework volunteers can help individuals apply for state and local benefits or war pensions and seek monetary support from service charities and benevolent funds.

Additionally, they can assist in organising and funding home adaptations or special mobility equipment for the elderly and disabled, as well as offering practical and emotional support to the lonely, ill or bereaved.

If we can help you, or someone you know, call the SSAFA Durham branch on 0191-383-9452 or 01388-818237, email us at durham@ssafa.org.uk or visit ssafa.org.uk for further information.
