FOR the benefit of those who persist in quoting Margaret Thatcher’s speech on “society”
out of context, she was showing concern for people who would become dependent on the state when there was more they could do to help themselves, hence “there is no such thing as society, there are only men, women and families”.
This is a far better aim for the disadvantaged than has resulted from the build up under Labour in welfare-dependent families.
