MANY people in this country have good values, but the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord (George) Carey is wrong in his recent well-publicised comments on curbing immigration if he believes these are Christian values.
How does he explain our justice-seeking laws on equal opportunity and discrimination when his Christian churches continue to discriminate against women and homosexuals?
Lord Carey gives the impression that the Church of England and Christianity have always supported democracy. Doesn’t he know that at the infamous 1819 Peterloo massacre of peaceful democracy protestors in Manchester the Riot Act was read by a Christian priest and another Christian priest authorised the military action?
The fact is that Church of England priests fought against extending the vote to ordinary people. They defended hierarchy and privilege and opposed democracy.
And how does Lord Carey explain the vast history of inter-religious killing by Christians in Britain, between Catholics, Protestants, and any individual or group branded as non-believers or heretics?
The truth is that the democratic, tolerant, freedom-loving and caring attitudes that so many people have in this country today are not Christian values. We are much better than that.
