THE UK Independence Party is proposing a ban on the wearing of the burka in public places and buildings. How very sensible.
This representation of subjugation of females has no religious significance and certainly has no place in the UK.
It has been used in the past to conceal not only the identities of women, but of men fleeing justice. It has provided cover for firearms and other weapons.
When we try to promote equal opportunities it is shameful that one group of people can hide from the public when in public yet, as stated by Ukip’s Nigel Farage, who leads the party’s 13 MEPs in Brussels, motorcycle crash helmets cannot be worn in banks or building societies.
There is, however, no one in authority in this country to support such a ban. We all must be seen to pay lip service to political correctness rather than supporting a common sense approach to security issues and, more importantly, fairness across society. To challenge an unacceptable custom would be too difficult for those in power.
