FROM time to time it is necessary to remind all 126 elected members of Durham County Council that their sole requirement is to effectively serve the interests of all the people they represent.
Not the interests of the party of which they may be a member, not their own personal interests nor the interests of the administration.
At the next opportunity each one should take a long hard look in a mirror, search their conscience and ask themselves if they are meeting this requirement.
This is most relevant at the present time, particularly with regard to the services and care for the old, vulnerable and disabled – many of whom are unable to fully express their wishes, views and concerns.
I trust that I am correct in believing that Independent members do already meet the requirement of only serving the people.
John Routledge, Witton Gilbert, Durham.
