RE your article about the right-wing think-tank, 2020Health (Echo, Jan 11).

As a Labour Party member, Conservative policies and their advisors give me cause for alarm for the people of this country.

Everybody realises that to provide the health service we all need, in the form we all know and love, costs money.

It is neither desirable or just to try to reduce the cost of providing such a service by cutting out any of the services provided on the grounds of cost, or perceived misuse.

The whole report must be a nightmare for those who have an obesity problem because of medical reasons, not self-abuse; those with acne which can be very debilitating and not treatable with over-the-counter products; those born with sexually transmitted diseases or who acquire them innocently because of infidelity of a partner; or those seeking help with alcohol abuse.

If such cuts were implemented, who would decide the cases? What other treatments could be withdrawn on similar grounds?

In some form or other we all pay tax, which goes to fund the NHS. We agreed to it being free for all at the point of need, and none of us wants right-wing thinkers trying to isolate anyone from its services.
