COLIN Mortimer (HAS Jan 7) says that the proposed demonstration march in Wootton Bassett by Islam4UK shows that “Islam holds no concern for the feelings of others”. It shows nothing of the sort – Islam4UK does not represent Islam.
It is a pity that The Northern Echo has not reported the widespread condemnation of Islam4UK by British Muslims.
Wiltshire Islamic Cultural Centre issued a press statement on behalf of all other Muslim community groups in the Wootton Bassett area calling on Islam4UK to cancel its march. It went on: “The media will no doubt grossly over-react, as usual, to such a protest, whether it is peaceful or otherwise, giving the impression that all Muslims follow this tiny minority of extremists.
“Therefore we are putting the record straight and letting the media and general public know that the vast majority of Muslims have nothing to do with this group...
“We strongly request Wiltshire Police to ban the proposed march in the interests of public order, public safety and community cohesion.”
The Muslim Council of Britain also issued a press release, agreeing with Allison Bucknell, Mayoress of Wootton Bassett, who called the planned march “a disgusting publicity stunt”.
Pete Winstanley, Durham.
■ Footnote: Islam4UK called off its march plan on Sunday, saying it had “successfully highlighted the plight of Muslims in Afghanistan”.
