WE have seen the Tan Hill Inn, Arkengarthdale, in all its remoteness on TV recently. In the Fifties, I was a sales rep for Post Office Telephones and Tan Hill was in my area. After a long, long wait for telephone service, I was able to provide for them the first wireless telephone in the Middlesbrough Telephone Area – maybe the first in the country. A forerunner, no doubt, of mobile phones.
