EIGHT years of my sales career were spent in the most practical, beneficial and heavily utilised art of physical and mental uplifting.

Whenever I was asked what I did for a living I used to say: “I’m in the meat-packing business.” I got away with that most of the time because it left little opportunity for response.

The various systems of engineering I promoted to achieve the best results came under such titles as Playtex, Youthline, Maidenform, Sarong and Sarongster, Lady Marlene, Skandal and Naturana. I was very good at finding new outlets and I was certainly able to uplift our family life.

If and when the real purpose of my activity was revealed the comical responses were never-ending. You must be able to think of some.
