THE awards under our country’s honours system are outdated.

For a start, the British Empire has long been given away.

Also, I worked for a company that had a CBE going spare so they put all the bosses’ names in a hat. Later, the winner’s name was in the paper – what a great chap he was being awarded the CBE. What a farce.

When football manager Brian Clough was being interviewed about the life of Liverpool manager Bob Paisley the interviewer said Paisley was a great man because he was awarded an OBE. Clough replied all that meant was “Other Buggers’ Efforts”. Then, a few years later, Clough was awarded one himself.
