THIS year we will have a General Election. Whatever your politics, few would argue that after 13 years of a Labour Government, it is time for change.
Nowhere is that change needed more than in the North-East.
Labour has failed so many communities in this region where deprivation and misguided interventions have led to cultures of dependency with numbers on incapacity benefits and young people not in education or employment depressingly high.
It’s time for a new Government determined to tackle some of our region’s long-standing problems and prepared to support families into training and employment while encouraging new business and job creation in the North-East through economic policies which empower people to create wealth.
Past Conservative governments got some things right and some things wrong.
David Cameron’s government will no doubt get some things right and wrong, too, but it’s clear that Mr Cameron is ready to be Prime Minister and the Conservatives are prepared to make the changes needed to get Britain and the North-East back on track.
James Bell, Durham.
