I COULDN’T agree more with Jim Allan’s comments about MPs (HAS, Nov 7). Why not go a little further before we once again have to vote based on history, media hype and bland manifesto pamphlets?
Exactly what do MPs do? They rarely attend the Chamber, they have no impact upon legislation emanating from Europe, committees appear to be talking shops, and on important issues they are forced to vote on party lines.
What are the duties of MPs? If it is to represent their constituents, then while we have political parties to form governments let’s outlaw the party whip.
Governments can implement unopposed those policies that are clearly set out and detailed within the manifesto upon which we are asked to choose.
All other matters to be decided through free votes by electronic means; committee meetings, if any are required, to be held by video conference; and MPs to be firmly based in their constituencies.
A variety of means are available for them to seek local views, take polls and, of course, for others to monitor their activity in terms of voting, effectiveness, etc.
The few occasions requiring presence in London can be simply met with public transport – removing most of the hassle over expenses.
