THE EU, like all human organisations, is not perfect, but criticism of it should be accurate and constructive.

The Commission, like our civil service, is not elected. It has a duty to look at issues in a broad way and submit findings to the EU Parliament for debate. Under the Lisbon Treaty these findings have to be submitted to national governments directly and not through the EU parliament.

The Commission has a duty to see that decisions are taken at the appropriate level. Local, regional and national issues should be dealt with in those areas. Subsidiarity is an important element in EU decision-making. When issues affect all countries national governments sanction EU action.

Travellers with a disability used to face a host of rules across the EU. Their ability to travel was increased through a directive agreed by all governments.

There are a number of airlines using poorly maintained planes unsuitable for passenger travel.

An EU directive, of which we were a part, banned them from operating in European air space.

We contribute to EU laws, therefore they are our laws.
