MANY MPs are resisting calls from Sir Thomas Legg’s expenses’ probe to repay expenses. This has confirmed what most of us all already knew: we are governed by an awful political system.
Our MPs return from recess to a totally unreconstructed Parliament. Everything the expenses crisis revealed as broken, remains broken. Our MPs remain unaccountable, our Parliament remains unrepresentative.
Short of a few suntans, all that’s changed is the number of days left until another General Election held under our antique voting system throws up another second-rate Parliament incapable of holding the government, or itself, to account.
The solutions we’ve heard from the party conferences show both Labour and Tory parties are still incapable of taking the necessary steps to fix our politics. They remain tolerant of our awful voting system despite promising reform which never comes.
Thus many MPs will hold safe seats for ever, whatever voters want, and they will go on safely drawing the expenses gained by their safe election in their safe seats. It is time for a change in our political system – not sometime but very soon.
