BIKE and car sharing is being suggested to conserve fuel and minimise CO2.

My dad bought me a second-hand bike when I passed my scholarship to go to Nunthorpe Grammar, York, in 1939. It cost a pound and was made up from random parts by a bloke on Tang Hall Lane, near the park.

Those were the days when the York area was full of service people from all over the world at different camps all around, and at Fulford and Strensall barracks. They came into York for a drink, entertainment, and different company.

Then they had to get back to camp. My sit-up-and-beg with racing handle bars provided the answer to this problem five times and I later collected it back from Clifford Street police station on every occasion.

That’s what I call bike sharing.
