RE George Harvey’s comparison of recently retired Army chief General Sir Richard Dannatt’s command of British forces in Afghanistan and General Montgomery versus Rommel in the Second World War (HAS, Oct 10).
Mr Harvey forgot to mention this was the same General Montgomery who ignored his own intelligence officers’ advice on the strength of the German defences of Arnhem when he went ahead and ordered the airborne attack there.
I suggest Mr Harvey should visit the Oosterbeek war cemetery.
