IT is interesting Ireland voted “Yes” to Europe in the re-run referendum despite concerted attempts by British Eurosceptics to engineer a “No” vote.
The British anti-EU group Open Europe has been campaigning for a “No” vote.
The UK Independence Party and its allies in the European Parliament (no Irish MEPs among them) leafleted all Irish homes. Several prominent British Eurosceptic politicians campaigned in Ireland. The Sun, the Sunday Times and the Daily Mail, all fierce EU critics, have specific Irish editions. The British papers have roughly one quarter of the daily market and a third of Sunday sales.
All, fortunately, to no avail.
