MUSICIAN and broadcaster Steve Race, whose death at the age of 88 was announced recently, was always admired.
He was a presenter of programmes on both radio and television and had a fine knowledge of music.
When discussing singers from the popular field, he showed his admiration for Ella Fitzgerald, Dick Haymes, Perry Como and Frank Sinatra.
He said that all these artists had true control, but Sinatra’s phrasing allowed him to get inside a song.
This was a widely respected view.
