YOUR report on the High Court’s quashing of four traffic regulation orders on green lanes in the Yorkshire Dales – “Off-road drivers see ban overturned” (Echo, June 20) – missed an important point.

Only one of the four green lanes in question, Gorbeck Road, has underlying rights that permit 4x4 drivers and motorcyclists to motor along it. The other three do not have vehicular rights throughout their length.

Any 4x4 user, or motorcyclist, who drives or rides along the full length of these routes will therefore be breaking the law.

This will sound puzzling, but the High Court judge’s ruling was on a point of law concerned with the imposition of traffic regulation orders, not on the rights of way on the four routes.
