WHAT a shame that Jim Tague (HAS, June 26) uses invective about a fellow correspondent whose views on Europe differ from his own.

On the same page, John Waiting gave figures of the cost to the UK of European Union membership without indicating their base and their source.

The European Movement in London regards similar figures as doubtful. They assume such figures probably come from a little-known Euro-sceptic body, Open Europe.

Evident are some statistical distortion, factual inaccuracy and contradictions.

Much more dependable figures of cost, from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the European Movement, were published in my previous letter (HAS, June 5).

As for Winston Churchill, let us remember his vision in the Zurich speech in September 1946 –“If Europe united is to be a living force, Britain will have to play her full part as a member of the European family.”
